Before you load the van, check what your material is actually worth. Scrap is priced by grade, and a mixed load is paid at the rate of its weakest component across the whole weight — so half an hour sorting copper from brass, or heavy steel from light, routinely changes the total by more than the trip costs.

It is also worth ringing more than one yard. Merchants in and around London price differently depending on what they process themselves and what they are short of, and on a worthwhile load that spread adds up. Quote your grade and rough weight and ask for a per-kilo rate.

Whichever merchant you use, bring photographic ID. Licensed dealers are required to record it, and they cannot pay you in cash — payment is by bank transfer or cheque.
