Stainless resists rust and has a distinctly brighter, greyer finish than plated or galvanised steel. A magnet helps: the common 18/8 and 316 grades are essentially non-magnetic, while ordinary steel sticks firmly. Note that some stainless grades are magnetic, so a magnet alone cannot rule stainless out.
316 contains molybdenum and a higher proportion of nickel, making it more corrosion-resistant and more expensive to produce. Nickel is the main driver of stainless scrap value, so the extra nickel translates directly into a higher price — the live table above shows today’s gap between the two.
Yes — sinks are usually 18/8 (304) and a typical one carries a few kilos of it, worth several times the same weight in ordinary steel. Take off the plastic waste fittings, rubber seals and any carbon-steel mounting brackets first.
Because grades look nearly identical but differ substantially in value. A handheld XRF analyser reads the alloy composition in seconds, so the buyer can pay the correct rate for what you actually have rather than pricing defensively for the worst case.
Our stainless steel prices are refreshed every trading day. Scrap prices track the underlying metal on the London Metal Exchange, which moves continuously, so a price quoted a week ago is rarely the price you will be paid today. Always check on the day you plan to sell.
The prices here are the rates buyers on ScrapBays are paying for clean, correctly sorted material. If your load is mixed, contaminated, still attached to other materials, or below a buyer's minimum weight, it will be graded down. Sorting and cleaning before you sell is the single biggest thing in your control.
