The basic identification test
Steel and iron are both magnetic — the quickest way to confirm you're looking at ferrous metal rather than a non-ferrous metal like aluminium or copper is simply whether a magnet sticks to it. Beyond that, condition and form are what actually determine value.
The main grades worth knowing
- Heavy steel/iron — thick structural material, machinery parts, engine blocks: generally the best-value ferrous grade due to easy processing
- Light steel/iron — thinner sheet metal, smaller components, car body panels: valued lower than heavy grades due to more handling required per tonne
- Cast iron — engine blocks, old radiators, certain machinery parts: a distinct grade from steel, generally priced separately
Where steel and iron scrap commonly comes from
- Demolition and construction sites — structural beams, rebar, fixings
- Old appliances — washing machines, cookers, and similar white goods contain significant recoverable steel
- Vehicles — end-of-life cars are one of the largest sources of scrap steel in the UK

Why volume matters more here than with other metals
Because steel and iron are relatively low-value per kilo compared to non-ferrous metals like copper, the economics of collecting and selling it depend heavily on volume — a small amount is rarely worth a special trip, while a genuinely large quantity (a full demolition clearance, for example) can represent serious value.
What affects the price you're offered
- Size and handling ease — large, easy-to-process pieces are generally valued higher than awkward, mixed, or heavily fabricated scrap
- Contamination — steel mixed with non-metal material (insulation, plastic, rubber) is typically discounted, since the buyer has to remove it
- Cast vs. wrought — cast iron and standard structural steel are graded and priced differently, so keeping them separate where practical helps
Getting the best price
For genuinely large volumes — a demolition job, a bulk vehicle clearance — the value difference between accepting a single buyer's quote and getting multiple buyers to compete for the load can be substantial, simply because of the sheer tonnage involved. Even relatively small percentage differences in price per tonne add up fast at scale.
